MIM - Musical Instrument Museum
The Museum of Musical Instruments of Brussels (MIM) was added as the fourth department to the Royal Museums of Art and History in January 1992, and is divided into two sections, the Early Music section and the Modern (19th and 20th century) and Traditional music section. Overall, it houses an invaluable collection of musical heritage.
Some 1,200 pieces from the collection are displayed on four floors, each with its own angle. The framework consists of panel texts, illustrations, photos and a free multimedia guide.
The first floor “History of Musical Instruments in Europe” offers a chronological trail from music in ancient Egypt to experiments with historical performance practice from the 19th century. Here you will discover that the violin has not always enjoyed as much prestige in the West as it is today, as well as how the fashionable tastes of the European aristocracy and bourgeoisie influenced musical instrument making.
The collection is also housed in a beautifully restored Art Nouveau building. The MIM presents about a hundred afternoon concerts a year and also offers a range of group activities.
