Basilica of Saint Servatius

The impressive and monumental Basilica of St. Servatius is located on the largest square in Maastricht. The Basilica of Saint Servatius itself, simply called 'Sintervaos' in Maastricht dialect, is a church building in the historic center of Maastricht, located between three squares: Vrijthofplein, Keizer Karelplein, and Henric van Veldekeplein. The church, said to have been built on the grave of Saint Servatius, is considered the oldest surviving church in the Netherlands. The large, three-aisled transept basilica is largely built in Romanesque style, using millstone dust and marl. The church building serves as the parish church of the Roman Catholic Saint Servatius parish and deanery church of Maastricht. The church has held the title of minor basilica since 1985. The church, cloisters and treasury are open to the public and can be visited for an entrance fee.

This basilica, which is the oldest in the Netherlands, has one of the most beautiful treasuries in Europe. It is not for nothing that it is on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. It is one of the highlights of Maastricht that you should not miss!

This is where Maastricht keeps its greatest treasures. The most valuable is the Servatius Shrine (also known as the Noodkist), containing the relics of the first Dutch bishop. This example of Maasland's goldsmithing is one of the most valuable in the Netherlands. You can also admire the pilgrim's staff, the bust of Saint Servatius, the pectoral cross, the chalice with carrying altar, the many relics and reliquaries, liturgical objects and textiles. You won't believe your eyes!
