Palace of Margaret of Austria

Margaret of Austria was regent of the Habsburg Netherlands between 1507 and 1530 and then resided in the Hof van Savoye, the first Renaissance building in the Low Countries. From here the renaissance spread.

On the facade you can still find Margareta's coat of arms, next to the coat of arms of Emperor Charles and a statue of Lady Justice.

At a young age, Margareta already had a turbulent married life. She is married off three times. At the age of 24, she now dresses as a widow and refuses to marry.

Margareta is appointed regent of the Netherlands and settles in Mechelen in 1507. She takes care of the education of Emperor Charles and his sisters. According to her compatriots, she runs the country with tact and a clear view.

One of her greatest successes is the Women's Peace of Kamerrijk in 1529. She can enforce it after hard negotiations with Louise de Savoye, mother of the French king and sister of the late Philibert.
