Mechelen
Mechelen, located in the south of the province of Antwerp, has the great advantage of being centrally located between the cities of Antwerp and Brussels, on the river Dijle. Mechelen has almost 87,000 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city in Flanders by population. In the province of Antwerp, it is the second largest city after the city of Antwerp.
The landmark of Mechelen is of course the Sint-Romboutstoren, visible from far and wide, which you can climb to enjoy a magnificent view of the city and its surroundings from the skywalk.
In terms of cultural history, you can enjoy the former palace of Margaret of Austria, the Renaissance past and no fewer than eight churches.
Be sure to pay a visit to the Great Beguinage, which was included on the UNESO list of World Heritage Sites thanks to its typical Flemish character and unusual architecture. Nearby is the brewery Het Anker, where the Gouden Carolus beer range awaits tasting. In summer, a boat trip on the Binnendijle should not be missing from the ‘to do’ list either.
