Ursuline Winter Garden
For Art Nouveau at a high level, you should visit the Winter Garden of the Ursuline sisters from Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Wavre.
At the time, they created a pearl of the then ultramodern Art Nouvea style. This enchanting Winter Garden from 1900 with a colorful stained glass dome was therefore the calling card of their then girls' boarding house. And, even more mysterious: the architect of the Winter Garden has remained unknown. However, a master designer was at work here.
As a visitor you will be enchanted by the play of light and color, with golden rays caressing the glass dome. The multicolored stained glass of the dome depicts the Morning, the Day and the Evening, a popular theme in Art Nouveau. You will discover a lot of fauna and flora in the glassware. Ferns, plants and flowers grow in the Winter Garden itself.
The winter garden is part of an impressive complex, protected as a monument, in which Art Nouveau, Neo-Gothic, Neo-Empire and Art Deco have been fused. You immediately step into another world. Names such as Empiregang, Alpenzaal, La Fontainerefectory, Pianogalerie and Eretrap stimulate the imagination.
Every Sunday from 2.30 pm there is a guided tour of two hours (12€ per person) in Dutch and in French and/or English, depending on the participants. Reservations are required and can be made up to 24 hours the Saturday in advance.
