Sint-Dimpna cycling route
Cycling enthusiasts can discover the legend of Dimpna, the patron saint of Geel, while cycling.
The Sint-Dimpna route introduces you to the “Merciful City” Geel, which at the time became famous worldwide for its family nursing. More than 300 families in the Geelse region offered mentally ill people a warm home for a short or long period of time.
Legend has it that the Irish king's daughter Dimpna was beheaded in the year 600 by her mad father in Geel. Her grave soon grew into a place of pilgrimage for the mentally ill.
The basic route is 42 km, and there is also a shortened version of 28 km. If you also want to visit Tongerlo Abbey, you should add 15 km. About 20% of the route is car-free, and 10% is unpaved.
The route is signposted via bicycle junctions. For the brochure, surf to www.kempen.be
