Forests of Bel
Geel is also known for its nature reserves, including the Bossen van Bel, which are also sometimes called the Dunes of the Kempen.
After the last ice age, the sand blowing out of the Grote Nete created sandy hills. Today you will discover an ancient and typical Kempen landscape in Geel-Bel, with high, dry inland dunes and low, wet stream valleys.
Not only can you enjoy walking, various special play zones have also been set up at the Kapucienenberg, the camping areas, De Volmolen, Malpertuus and at the bivouac De Kruiswacht. Here you can build camps with material from the forest or play a forest game.
Nature lovers can also visit the Mosselgoren nature reserve, a collection of deciduous and alder forests, reed beds, moist meadows and pools. The various streams are still reminiscent of the past, when Mosselgoren belonged to a flood plain of the Kleine Nete.
The Larum Neerhelst nature reserve should not be missed either. The 14 hectare domain mainly consists of wet meadows, a number of pools, a sand dune, a coppice and various grazing meadows with sheep.
