Gravensteen Ghent
The Castle of the Counts is a mystical fortress with a very eventful history, closely intertwined with the complex and often turbulent political and social history of the city. It is also the only surviving medieval moated castle with an almost intact defense system in Flanders.
A visit to the Castle of the Counts gives you a complete picture of the knight culture in the 12th century. Accessible to visitors are the gatehouse, rampart, keep, count's residence and horse stables.
In the Castle of the Counts you will also find a unique collection of torture devices. The former storeroom houses the torture devices on display in an evocative “execution's cabinet”. In the audience room you can view the collection of court objects.
The Gravensteen also houses many cultural activities and events. Many residents of Ghent choose this location to give their 'yes' here.
Those who would like to combine a visit to the Gravensteen with a touch of humor can opt for the audio tour recorded by the Ghent comedian Wouter Deprez. He tells you the history but then interspersed with funny anecdotes and compelling knight battles in the background.
