The Krook Library
De Krook is a library and open house for knowledge, culture and innovation. This architectural masterpiece is a meeting place for residents, students and visitors. The imposing building is located in a place that used to be called “Waalse Krook”. In that creek or bend in the Scheldt ships brought in coal from Wallonia.
You can meet others, soak up culture, have a quiet drink or get started with innovations and technologies such as 3D printing and virtual reality. In addition to people, the building also connects the Historic Center and the Arts Quarter.
Various institutions offer their services on the site. Together they are called “the Krook residents”. In addition to the city library, Imec (the Flemish research center for nanoelectronics and digital technologies), the University of Ghent and Urgent.fm also have their place here. The building also includes a multipurpose room, a study room and a reading café.
At the bend of the Scheldt is a quay promenade with seating, called the Nelson Mandelapromenade. Mooring places are provided for pleasure craft and taxi boats. The quays and surroundings have been given more greenery and are a perfect spot to escape the bustle of the city.
