That Hasselt is known for its jenever is no longer a secret. But have you ever heard of the gin festivals? Yes, it is as beautiful as it sounds. Every year in October the Hasselaren celebrate. The Borrelmannetje, the bronze statue on the corner of Maastrichterstraat, plays the leading role that day. During the jenever festivities, the water that flows through the statue is replaced for one day by real Hasselt jenever, and that is a real feast every year. Because let's face it, free jenever flowing from a fountain in the jenever city, that can't be anything but good, can it?
