Virga-Jesse Basilica

Just outside the shopping street of Hasselt is the Virga-Jesse basilica. It used to be a place to honor Mary, although Mary was often referred to as Virga Jesse by the people of Hasselt. Today it is mainly a place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city. The showpiece in the basilica is the oak Virga-Jesse statue. Unfortunately, the basilica was hit hard during the Second World War. Miraculously, the Virga-Jesse statue was later recovered from the rubble without a scratch. And luckily.
