The Atomium
The most popular attraction in Brussels is undoubtedly the Atomium, inaugurated in 1958 for the World Exhibition. With its shiny spheres, it gives the skyline of Brussels a vintage touch. Over the years it has become a Brussels and Belgian icon and symbol par excellence.
And that makes sense, because the beautiful 360° panoramic view of Brussels and its surroundings alone is unique. It also gives you a kick when you can enjoy a snack, lunch (with 100% Belgian products) or dinner in such a sphere at a height of 95 meters. You will also take a surrealistic walk through tubes and spheres, and you can visit the permanent exhibition on the history of the building as well as the temporary exhibitions with different themes.
The gigantic magnified iron crystal with its nine spheres (the iron atoms) remains a symbol of scientific progress even today. It is not without reason that the basic sphere was recently given the name of the Brussels professor and physicist François Englert, who received the highest international scientific award with his Nobel Prize in Physics. The event sphere had already been named after that other Belgian Nobel Prize winner, Ilya Prigogine, the Brussels professor who won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1977.
