Saint Martin's Church Aalst
The Saint Martin's Church is currently undergoing a thorough restoration, divided into 10 phases. The exterior restoration has now been completed, resulting in a beautiful new facade. The interior restoration started in 2020 and will run until 2027.
During the restoration of the choir, the restorers came across an authentic mural under the many layers of lime above the sacrament tower.
In 2020, work was also done on the restoration of the painting “Preaching of John the Baptist”, which is attributed to Frans Pourbus de Jonge. The painting, owned by the Gasthuiszusters van Aalst, was housed in the Heilig Hartkerk in Aalst when the sisters moved. After the sale of the church mentioned, the work found a new home in the Sint-Martinuskerk on Priester Daensplein.
In the same church there are also four altar paintings by Pieter Paul Rubens. The City of Aalst received two research grants to have a preliminary study carried out into these officially recognized “top pieces”. The preliminary investigation is necessary to be able to estimate the condition of the paintings, with a view to a restoration proposal.
