Aalst Station

The railway station, along with the surrounding district, was designed in 1852 by Jean-Pierre Cluysenaer. He got his inspiration from the colonnade of the Borse of Amsterdam. The battlements, the corner turrets and the central battle tower are reminiscent of a medieval castle.

The direct train connection from Ghent to Brussels via Aalst meant a considerable increase in the distribution possibilities of Aalst products and an advantage for the supply of the many factories in Aalst. This building was completely renovated in 1990, and the city is now working closely with the NMBS, Infrabel, De Lijn and Waterwegen and Zeekanaal NV to create a new station environment.

In the city walking brochure “Between the skirts of the onion city” you can discover even more special buildings in Aalst. The brochure is available via the webshop and in the tourist information office on the Hopmarkt.
