If you walk into the city park from the Prins Bisschopssingel, you will soon come across the bear pit. Real bears used to live there, but of course that couldn't go on forever. That is why the bear pit has been given an artistic purpose. You will also find statues of a reclining giraffe with a girl next to it, referring to the suffering the bears endured in the pit. This work of art has caused quite a stir, but it is and remains a beautiful part of Maastricht and is definitely worth a visit. A little further on is a statue of the bear Jo, one of the famous bears from the bear pit. He sits inconsolably on a bench, but it is precisely this sadness that is the defining characteristic of beauty in this work of art.
D'Artagnan
Walk further, and you will come across the statue of D'Artagnan. This special monument in the city park commemorates the musketeer who fell on 25 June 1673 at the Tongerensepoort. Take a seat on the semicircular bench and admire the beauty that this part of the city park has to offer.

If you walk towards the center, you will find the animal park. It was completely renovated in 2018 and the deer and other animals will return to the park later this year.

Continuing on, you'll follow a path past the impressive fountain - a hot spot for summer picnics. Find a spot on the lawn next to the cannons and enjoy the beautiful sunny weather, or walk along the historic city walls and enjoy the beautiful view over the city park. There are many hidden gems around the city wall and city park. After you have passed under the imposing Helpoort, you will arrive in the romantic Jekerkwartier. Maastricht continues to amaze!
