St. Dimpna's Church
The Sint-Dimpna Church, built between 1349 and 1570, is a fine example of Demer Gothic. Originally founded as a pilgrimage church, it is without doubt one of the most beautiful and most important reminders of the unique past of the Merciful City. According to the legend of Saint Dimpna, the Irish king's daughter Dimpna and her confessor Gerebernus were buried here after they were murdered.
In the church you can find 5 “masterpieces”, including the “Merodekes”, two paintings attributed to the Haarlem painter Jan Mostaert.
Together with a guide you can climb to just below the ridge of the never completed tower. Together with a walk over the vaults, this is definitely a special experience.
The Sint-Dimpnakerk is open from April 1 to September 30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays to Sundays from 2 to 5 p.m. You can also visit the church in group by appointment. For more info, surf to www.visit-geel.be
