The “Nieuwe Beurs” was built in 1531 because the “Oude Beurs” in the Hofstraat had become too small. It was the first fair ever to be built specifically for that purpose, and it would later become the model for all stock exchange buildings in the world. After the stock exchange function ceased to exist in 1997, the building stood empty for 20 years. But fortunately, after a thorough restoration, visitors can once again enjoy the impressive interior of the Handelsbeurs; a feast for the eyes without a doubt.
