Burgh-Haamstede
The core Burgh-Haamstede actually consists of two villages: Haamstede and Burgh. The seaside resort is now a tourist attraction at the top of Schouwen. Until 1961, Burgh and Haamstede were two independent villages that grew closer together. Haamstede probably originated in the 12th century. Haam or heem means dwelling and stede means place. Slot Haamstede is a tangible reminder of one of the most famous residents of Haamstede: Witte van Haamstede. He was the bastard son of Count Floris V.
