Aalbeke
“Aalbeke is a village that you drive through”, or that's how ex-board member Filip Santy claims. Aalbeke is indeed a village that you drive through blindly if you are on your way to la douce France, but next time you should make a stop. If you need a landmark, look for the West-Vlaamse Sjouwer, a 35-meter-high monument erected in the late 1970s for the frontier workers who moved to France. The monument has four points at the top that symbolize the four cardinal directions. The largest point, of course, points towards France. You will find the real pearls of Aalbeke when you walk into the village. It is a place where creatives are given free rein and where culture is number one. Of course, this is also accompanied by a bustling catering industry.
